Microsoft Overhauls DirectX Raytracing to Cut VRAM and Boost Speed

Microsoft has unveiled a preview update to DirectX Raytracing (DXR), marking its most significant upgrade to the standard since 2018. The overhaul introduces clustered geometry and partitioned top-level acceleration structures (PTLAS), techniques that divide complex 3D models into small sub-elements and localize ray tracing recalculations to specific dynamic areas of a game world. By eliminating the need to recalculate massive monolithic acceleration structures when objects move, the vendor-agnostic system dramatically reduces VRAM footprint while enabling games to trace against full-detail geometry for crisp, realistic reflections and shadows.
