A 728-foot new crater is discovered on the Moon
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has spotted a 728-foot-wide impact crater on the Moon that formed in 2024. Named McGetchin crater, the site was produced when an asteroid or comet roughly the size of a six-story building slammed into the lunar surface at high speed. The collision gouged out a 141-foot-deep basin and created a surrounding thermal anomaly extending for miles. Scientists estimate that impacts of this magnitude occur on the Moon only about once per century, offering astronomers an unprecedented, real-time look at how energetic collisions reshape planetary bodies.
