AI algorithm stabilizes mRNA vaccines for room-temperature storage
MIT engineers have used a transformer-based AI algorithm to design heat-stable lipid nanoparticles that protect fragile mRNA molecules without requiring cold-chain refrigeration. In experiments published in Nature Biotechnology, vaccines formulated with the AI-optimized coating remained stable at room temperature for up to a year and survived at 100°F (38°C) for two months. When injected into mice, the room-temperature COVID-19 vaccine triggered an immune response identical to standard cold-stored formulations. By accurately predicting optimal lipid ratios from small datasets, the algorithm drastically shortens formulation testing, opening the door to low-cost, shelf-stable mRNA vaccines for global distribution.
